The Sierra Nevadas pose a formidable obstacle to travelers who seek to cross them.  The town of Minden, Nevada grew up to serve those exhausted voyagers with fresh provisions and horses.  The Fall bloom on these trees against the somber mountains reminds me of the stark contrast between what the town offered, and what faced the westward bound pioneers.
